Sunday Links – 05.23.10

Happy Sunday, folks. I’m going to try something here and hope I stick to it – a weekly gathering of articles and links that have been of interest to me, and maybe you’ll get something out of them too. Its a short list today, but my intent is more of a ‘week in review’ thing, so it might just explode next week. Off we go…

— With not one mention of the controversial ad that supposedly got him in hot water with Montreal Canadiens’ management, Big George Laraque blames coach Jacques Martin for his dismissal from the hockey club.

Frank Seravelli of Philadelphia Daily News explains why the Flyers’ Dan Carcillo epitomizes the playoffs.

— There’s a new online sports talk show coming – The D League: “The newest & best sports talk show to hit the internet launches on July 28th with Patrick & Jack. Details to come! In the meantime…let the discussion begin!” Follow them on twitter now…there’s a contest going on you might be interested in.

— Long time Tampa Bay Lightning blogger Jon Jordan recently launched his own site, where it appears he will be sharing his thoughts on various other subjects in the ‘Millerian rant’ style. Be warned, though – like Steve Martin once said, “Comedy is not pretty.” 😉

— For you hockey nuts out there, do check out Shmitzy Says, a Canadiens’ fan who is probably up to his ass in “WTF?” right about now (sorry Scott, I had to 🙂 ).

Enjoy what’s left of your weekend, kids.

So I was watching the Tour of California bicycle race last night on the Versus Network . Really. All of five minutes of it actually, since immediately following it was the 2nd game of the Eastern Conference Finals. Promptly at 7 PM ET, Versus switched the coverage to the hockey broadcast, apparently with a mile to go to the finish.

Later that evening, the twitter community (at least the people who follow Mr Armstrong) received the following tweet:

“Who’s the dumbass @versustv that cut off @AmgenTourofCali coverage w/ a mile to go for pregame hockey?? #pathetic”

Fantasy Sophomores, Mothers’ Day and Playoff Beards…

My latest blog at “From The Point” is now up –

‘Sophomore Slump’. Two horrendous words. Having a player on your fantasy team who is going through a brutal second season can make things interesting during your quest for league supremacy.

Steven Stamkos proved this year that The Slump doesn’t hit everyone, more than doubling his rookie season output of 46 points. Of course, only one team in your league had his stats accumulate to their benefit, while the rest of the armchair GM’s were saying to themselves, “Damn, I wish I had that guy.”

It’s a bit early with the playoffs in full gear, but I’m going to look at some of this year’s rookies that ought to have better seasons the second time around (or, at the very least, should avoid taking a step backward). So, without further ado – and in no particular order – let’s get started with a few from the Eastern Conference…
